Viral Spicy Chip Challenge Got Out Of Hand: What You Need to Know
Do not try this at home
The recent, heartbreaking death of a 14-year-old Massachusetts teenager has left everyone concerned, and it’s all because of a viral social media challenge involving an insanely spicy tortilla chip. Even as an African who loves spices so much I couldn't try it.
From what I have read and seen on TikTok so far, the teenager tragically passed away, and while I am not exactly sure why, his mom told The New York Times that one of the last things he ate was a Paqui brand chip. It came in a spooky coffin-shaped box with a label that said “One Chip Challenge”.
Paqui had been promoting this spicy challenge online with the hashtag #OneChipChallenge. The company decided to pull the product from the shelves.
Paqui’s website did have some warnings on the chip’s packaging. They said the chips were only for adults and not for kids.
I always try to tell people to be mindful of the kind of content they consume, because of how social media works, the more you interact with certain types of content, the more you see similar stuff. So if a kid watches one of these crazy challenges online, they’re likely to come across more of them.
